The art of caring
Should we make musical awakening to children?
School is here and moms are
wondering if it is not time to open their children’s senses and
emotions to the arts and especially to music.
Many questions then arise: where
to register my child? Isn’t he too young to start making music?
Is he gifted?
What instrument will he make?
First of all, the musical
awakening begins even before the youngest age, since the child
captures all the sounds in the womb of his mother, he is even
able to recognize songs that he «learned» before his birth. He
makes the difference between his father’s voice and that of his
mother.
This answers the question of
age: if the musical awakening is adapted to the child it can
follow even from 2 years. Before that it is more the role of the
parents who must put the child in contact with sound beneficial
environments.
Musical awakening is therefore not reserved for this or
that category of children. From such to such age. It is
practiced from birth, but it must be adapted to each child.
An awakening adapted to each.
Each child is different, we must perceive in each one the
way he will hear and then listen to the music. To hear, to
capture, is not just to listen.
The first form of musical awakening is the acceptance of musical
sound. For this the Music Master must let the children soak up
music, discover rhythms and sounds slowly. The child will
gradually make the difference between sounds, noises, rhythms,
slowness and rapidity of the air.
Do not let time and «activity» take precedence over musical
feelings.
The child does not have the notion, and that is fine, of the
profitability of time. He learns at a rate that is very
different from that of adults or adolescents. Leave the child
his initiation to the discovery without waiting for an immediate
sound rendering.
Energy and games
The child has a lot of energy, he often spends it on himself
let go during the musical awakening classes. The musical
awakening is also that of the senses, of listening in
particular. The practice musical is not only in the «doing» but
also in the «being» receptive, in the silence of listening which
in a child is rarely passive.
Only then, having left his too full of enthusiasm and ardour to
the game unfold, he will turn his attention to musical
instructions or listenings and on musical learning. It is often
a stumbling block to a real musical and sound discovery. The
hyper active child, contrary to what we believe, does not calm
down by making music; he manages his energy, he focuses it and
learns to structure it in various phases that for him are not
frustrating.
Let us never forget that if it is the parents who enroll the
children in musical awakening workshops, it is not necessarily
the taste of the child. He may want other activities: painting,
yoga, crafts… what is true for adults is also true for children.
